Shoot for the Moon

shoot for the moon

We make it our goal to please him (Jesus Christ). 2 Corinthians 5:9 (NIV)

Journalist Lester Brown said, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars.” That’s good advice. To be successful you obviously have to have a goal.

The Scottish essayist, historian and philosopher, Thomas Carlyle said, “A man without a purpose is like a ship without a rudder.” That’s a scary thought. If you don’t know where you’re going it’s highly unlikely you’ll get there. Do you know where you’re going? Do you know? The Lebanese writer and artist Kahil Gibran said, “The significance of a man is not in what he attains, but rather in what he longs to attain.” What do you long to do with your life? What one thing do you want to do above every other thing?

Here are some suggested life goals from a Google search:

– enroll in a local first aid course

– get a yearly medical examination

– do some exercise

– try out something new every now and then

– keep records of various events and happenings in your life

– don’t be afraid to be yourself

– take time to relax

Somehow that just doesn’t cut it. Surely there’s more to life than selfishness. Surely there’s more to life than endlessly creating oneself. The apostle Paul would agree. He set his sights high. He set his sights on selflessness. He believed in living for something and someone greater than himself. In 2 Corinthians 5:9 he said, “We make it our goal to please him (Jesus Christ).”

Now that’s a goal worth living for. The purpose of life is to worship Him, serve Him, imitate Him, confess Him, endure for Him, proclaim Him, and love Him. There is no higher calling. It’s not about you or me, it’s all about Him. So make every effort to lay hold of Him . . .
