Is your god too safe?

“Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all” 1 Chronicles 29:11

Is your god too safe? Stop, think about it. Is your god too safe? Is he predictable, easily tamed, part of the scenery, able to fit in your box? Is he comfortable, never one to take you by surprise, happy to stay in the background, yet always at your beck and call? If he is, then he’s not much of a god at all. For any god who allows himself to be reduced to your restrictive view (and mine) doesn’t deserve to be a god.

It’s different with Almighty God. You can’t constrain or constrict Him. He defies any and all attempts to rationalize or reduce Him. Try as you might, there’s simply no way you’ll mould Him, shape Him, or fashion Him. Even the breath the atheist uses to deny Him is sustained by Him. For God’s not created in our image, nor birthed in our imagination. He stands distinct, unlike any other, over all and above all.

Don’t be deceived. God will never be limited by our nearsightedness. He will do His thing as He’s always done His thing. And when God does His thing, it’s dramatic, out of the ordinary, beyond compare. He’s the One who places the rainbow in the sky, divides the Red Sea, rains down manna in the desert, raises people from the dead, makes an axe head float on water, stills a storm, gives sight to the blind, makes the lame walk, enables a donkey to talk, opens the ears of the deaf, transforms a life from within, and so much more.

That’s why we shouldn’t parcel Him, patent Him, or paddock Him. God isn’t conditioned or predetermined by anything or anyone other than Himself. Without compromise He authenticates Himself, is self-conscious, self-determined. All authority is His. His unlimited strength affects all His purposes in the way in which He ordained them.

Which is why I worship Him. For He’s no ordinary god. He’s extraordinary, bigger than any box, never safe …
