Graces and Blessings

The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. Psalm 145:18 (NIV)

I wouldn’t be much of a Scot if I didn’t share some Scottish graces and blessings with you. (The truth is I’m only Scottish on my father’s side of the family. Dad being born in Grantown on Spey. Mum, on the other hand is English. I guess that makes me a Sassenach to the purists!). Nonetheless, I hope you’ll find this collection of prayers special.

The Selkirk Grace

Some hae meat, and canna eat,

And some wad eat that want it;

But we hae meat, and we can eat

And sae the Lord be thankit.

Robert Burns

1759-1796

Be Ye our Angel Unawares

If after Kirk ye bide a wee,

There’s some would like to speak to ye,

If after Kirk ye rise and flee

We all seem cauld and still to ye.

The one that’s in the seat with ye

Is stranger here than ye, maybe.

All here have got their fears and cares,

Add ye your soul unto our prayers,

Be ye our angel unawares.

If there is Righteousness in the Heart

If there is righteousness in the heart,

there will be beauty in the character.

If there is beauty in the character,

there will be harmony in the home.

If there is harmony in the home,

there will be order in the nation.

If there is order in the nation,

there will be peace in the world.

So let it be.
