“Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” John 14:27 (NIV)

The Christian’s response in times of war should be fivefold:

Pray earnestly. “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” 1 Timothy 2:1-2. In addition, “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven” Matthew 5:44.

Pursue peace. “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” Romans 12:18. Peace starts with you and me. We must do whatever it takes, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to bring about peace. It starts in the home and works out from there. Pursue peace with your spouse, your family, your children, your neighbour, your colleagues at work, and so on. As the church goes – so goes the world.

Put away fear. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God” John 14:1. Jesus Christ is the “King of kings and Lord of lords” Revelation 17:14. He is in control, He can be counted on, He knows what He’s doing, and He’s looking after you and me. David says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? . . . Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident” Psalm 27:1, 3.

Point others to Christ. The world is looking for peace but often looks in the wrong places. Peace is found in a person, in one person, in the Lord Jesus Christ. “No God – no peace; know God – know peace” Anonymous. Peace will rule the day when Christ rules the heart. In times of war Christians have a wonderful opportunity to talk to others about the Prince of Peace and how He guides “our feet into the path of peace” Luke 1:79.

Press on. There will be permanent peace when Jesus Christ returns. “He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore” Isaiah 2:4. So press on. “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called” and do so “until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time” 1 Timothy 6:12, 14-15.
