Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  Matthew 6:34

Most folk would agree that “each day has enough trouble of its own” Matthew 6:34. My friend John Reid will agree that there was one day with more than enough trouble.

It started out as a tranquil day. John and I were preparing materials for a grade nine metalwork project. As we were cutting a sheet of brass on the guillotine, we heard what sounded like popping balloons. The sporadic pop-popping continued and we barely gave it a second thought until the school came alive to the sound of police sirens and screeching tyres. Being real rubbernecks we immediately ran outside to see what was happening. We had a grandstand view. A desperate criminal was racing across a sports field and the police were in hot pursuit. It was like being in the middle of an action movie. Guns were blazing away and the police were converging on the criminal from all sides. I even had to leap out of the way as a police car went into a skid and nearly ran me over. Then as quickly as it had started it stopped. The criminal had run out of ammunition and the police were disarming him and clapping on handcuffs.

By the time the police had placed the criminal in the back of a truck John and I were walking back to the workshop. On the way we passed his car and noticed that a stray bullet had torn through the rear fender. It was only when we made this discovery that the reality of what we had just witnessed began to dawn on us. It was then, when we were back in the workshop, that we realized how fortunate we were that neither of us had been shot!

You may not have been in life threatening situations but you’ll certainly have times when you fret and worry. Remember the words of Jesus. He tells you not to “worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself … but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness … for your heavenly Father knows what you need” Matthew 6:32-34.
