White Sheets and Hot Soup

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”  Revelation 21:4

My friend Jill Roberts, an elementary school teacher, had endured enough impertinence for one day. Turning to the nine-year-old boy she said, “If you won’t behave yourself, you must stand outside!” A while later she stepped out to talk to the boy, and, during the conversation realized there were obviously greater issues than cheekiness in this boy’s life.
So Jill began making inquiries. She soon discovered that, unbeknownst to the school, the boy’s mother had died and his father had moved to another city. When the father pushed off he had left his son with the twenty-one-year-old sister who had then abandoned him. He was now fending for himself in a desolate apartment and begging food from the neighbours. Jill was obviously distraught and immediately called Child Welfare (Social Services) and insisted that the boy be taken to a foster home.
The next day the boy arrived at school with clean clothes and a big smile. Jill gave him a hug and asked how he was. “Well Mrs Roberts,” he said enthusiastically, “I slept in white sheets and had hot soup for supper!”
From a state of abandonment and despair the boy moved to a situation of security and happiness. The day he went to the foster home he wiped away his tears and hope was kindled in his heart.
Likewise the day we go to heaven “He will wipe every tear from (our) eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” Revelation 21:4.
Sounds great – doesn’t it? Despite the trials and tribulations in this life the day will come when we’ll receive our eternal reward. And what a reward it will be. It will even surpass sleeping in white sheets and having hot soup for supper!
